What Our Dog Parents Are Saying

Common Dog Insurance Questions

Can I use Pets Best pet insurance at any vet?

Yes! Pets Best covers eligible veterinary care at any licensed veterinary office in the US and Canada, including specialty and emergency clinics. You pay your vet directly, then submit a claim for reimbursement. There’s no network to worry about, so you can stick with the vet you already trust.

Does Pets Best insurance cover older dogs and senior dogs?

Yes, Pets Best has no upper age limits, so you can enroll a senior dog at any stage of life. Once enrolled, your coverage won’t be reduced simply because your dog gets older. While pre-existing conditions are not eligible for coverage, senior dog insurance can help provide financial protection for new age-related health issues, including cancer, heart disease, and kidney disease. As dogs age and veterinary costs increase, coverage can help make unexpected care more affordable.

Is dog insurance worth it?

For most pet parents, yes. The veterinary costs for unexpected accidents and illnesses can easily run into the thousands, and pet insurance makes it easier to budget for those moments without having to choose between your finances and your pet's care. If you're considering pet insurance for puppies, enrolling early generally gets you the best rates and helps avoid pre-existing condition exclusions down the road. Read more about whether pet insurance is worth it for you.

Is dog insurance worth it for older dogs?

Older dogs are more likely to develop costly health conditions like cancer, arthritis, and heart disease, and veterinary costs tend to increase as dogs age. While pre-existing conditions won't be covered, pet insurance can help protect you financially against new age-related illnesses and unexpected emergencies, so you can focus on your dog's care rather than the cost.

When is the best time to buy dog insurance?

The best time to enroll is as early as possible, ideally when your dog is young and healthy. Enrolling early helps you get the best rates and ensures that any conditions your dog develops after enrollment are eligible for coverage. Since pet insurance doesn't cover pre-existing conditions, getting a policy in place before any health issues arise gives your pup the most protection possible.

Does dog insurance cover dental care?

Our Accident and Illness dog insurance plans include dental coverage for conditions like periodontal disease, dental fractures, and extractions, provided your pet showed no signs of dental disease before the policy started. For pets age 3 and older, an annual dental cleaning and exam under anesthesia is required to maintain eligibility for certain coverage. You can also add optional routine care to help offset the cost of preventive dental cleanings. Learn more about our dental coverage.

Does pet insurance cover puppy vaccinations?

Our base accident and illness plans don't cover routine preventive care like vaccinations, but our optional wellness add-on was made for exactly that! You can add a wellness plan to any accident and illness policy to help cover the cost of your puppy's vaccinations, along with other routine care like vet exams and dental cleanings. It's a popular choice for new puppy parents looking to budget for those first-year wellness visits.

What isn’t covered by Pets Best dog insurance?

Like all pet insurance plans, Pets Best has some exclusions to keep premiums affordable. Pre-existing conditions are not covered, but curable conditions are no longer considered pre-existing once fully healed. Elective and preventive procedures, parasite treatment and prevention, non-veterinary expenses (like grooming and special diets), and herbal or experimental therapies are also excluded. For full details, see our coverage page.

Are mixed-breed dogs eligible for pet insurance?

Mixed-breed dogs are absolutely eligible for Pets Best coverage. Regardless of breed or mix, every dog deserves great care, and we're here to help make that possible.

Does pet insurance cover service dogs?

Yes, service dogs are eligible for Pets Best coverage. While pet insurance doesn't cover the cost of service dog training itself, it can help cover eligible veterinary expenses for accidents and illnesses, just like any other dog. Keep in mind that behavioral condition treatment and training-related costs are not included, but having coverage in place means unexpected health issues don't have to interfere with the important work your service dog does.
