Specially trained dogs from countries such as China, France and Russia are already on their way to the Caribbean island, with several other areas pledging to send dogs soon. These dogs are provided with the best pet care and are specifically trained for rescue efforts by learning how to sniff for signs of life.
In addition to the sniffing dogs providing aid in finding survivors, the canines are also serving as a sense of comfort to the rescuers on their way to the devastated country, providing comfort during a tense time, according to the news source.
To be a search and rescue dog, the canines must be in perfect dog health and in fit form. Typical breeds for search and rescue dogs include German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Dobermans and Labradors, according to the National Association for Search and Rescue.
