The Cavalier King Charles is one of the smallest Spaniels and one of largest lap dogs, but fills the role well. They are extremely affectionate, patient and good with children and other pets. They are naturally curious and playful, and make excellent companions. This breed tends to be accepting and friendly towards strangers and thus is not well suited as a guard dog. They were originally bred for hunting, but their small size made them ill-suited for this. They still retain some of those tendencies, however, and can be prone to chasing things that move. They possess an average intelligence and are trainable. Their coat requires minimal grooming with regular weekly brushing. They can have above average energy, but are also typically content to cuddle on a lap.
